token ring switch and multiring

Hi, All,

Was Playing around the token ring switch and the multiring. I have
found some interesting facts. Here is the scenario. r1, r2 and r3 are
connected to port 1, 2 and 3 on a 3900 switch. brf50 is created and crf
51 and 53 are under it. port 1 and 2 are under crf51 and port 3 is
under crf53. All token ring interfaces are in same subnet, say
150.50.1.1 until 150.50.1.3.

if bridging mode is SRT for both CRFs, r3 can ping r1/2 w/o "multiring
ip". we all know that.

if bridging mode is default for both CRFs, here are some facts I found.
- w/o "multiring ip", r3 can not ping r1/r2 under any circumstance
- with "multiring ip", but either CRF's ring number is auto, no ping
- assign specific ring numbers to both CRFs, ping eventually went thru,
but you have to wait from 50 to 90 seconds, during which time, none of
token ring interface will go thru initialization process. they all stay
up
- change say crf53 to a different ring number, but immediately shut, no
shut on r3's token ring interface, ping went thru right away.

Sounds to me, each time you change the ring number, the token ring
interface has to go thru some ring number relearning process. Now my
question is why it doesn't work(even with "multiring ip") if ring
number is auto?
