I agree that is not many at all when you compare it to the number of
MCSE's, CCNPs etc. I believe these certifications number in the hundreds of
thousands. It will take at least 4 or 5 more years to get just 20,000 CCIEs.
I also believe and hope that even though things are not great right now,
that in 4 or 5 years the demand for CCIE's will increase as highly skilled
networking people become more vital as new technologies such as IPT,
Security and online applications become more prevalent.
