Kasturi,
I provided previous example - just for my understanding - how it works.
"ntp server" creates classical client-server model . Server is clock source,
client queries server for time.
"ntp peer" creates peer model (equal rights with regards - who can provide
clock).
Box (r1) with ip 1.1.1.1 can provide time to box (r2) with ip 2.2.2.2 IF:
a) box (r1) has synchronized time itself - i.e. gets time from other box
with startum level >= 14 (from (r0)
or configured itself with "ntp master"
b) AND (second condition) has "ntp peer 2.2.2.2" in its config
In this case- box (r2) gets time from box (r1) IF
a) we put on (R2) "ntp client broadcast" under interface faced to (r1)
Sorry, I was wrong initially when said "R2 doesn't have ANY explicit ntp
configuration"
or b) we put on (r2) "ntp peer 1.1.1.1"
Of course You can configure box (r2) with "ntp server 1.1.1.1" instead of
"ntp peer 1.1.1.1"
I see only one case when I would put "ntp peer" instead of "ntp server" -
only if I don't want to put
ip address of clock source, so in this case I have to put "ntp client
broadcast" and get time from lower stratum clock source (if it's available).
Don't know what will happen if stratum is the same for 2 or more sources.
Dmitry

Subject: RE: NTP server/peer
Dmitry,
Was looking at ur example and had some clarification ? was trying to follow
the thread and understand it.
>Now R1 configured as client of server r0.
>and R1 configured with "ntp peer r2.r2.r2.r2" >
>R2 doesn't have ANY explicit ntp configuration.
>R1 provides time to R2 without any queries from r2. R2 syncronized with r0.
>That what did You mean ?
1. Why are u doing the above ? i thought when u are saying r1 is client of
r0 the statement should be "ntp peer a.a.a.a" .
2. When R2 does not have any NTP config then why do u want to use "ntp peer
r2.r2.r2.r2" ? How can r2 be in synch with r0 if there is no config on it.
Am i understamding this right ?
Good Luck,
Kasturi.
