1. Some of the newer flash memory simply won't work with the older Boot
ROMs. You say you have the latest Boot ROMs. Are you sure? Could you
please post the version you are running?

I think 11.0(10c) is the latest:

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c), SOFTWARE
BOOTLDR: 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-BOOT-R), Version 11.0(10c),
RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

2. Try erasing flash before the "copy tftp flash" and see if this gives
you any more information. See below for an example:

---
Router(boot)#erase flash
System flash directory:
File Length Name/status
  1 6248292 c2500-io-l.120-9.bin
[6248356 bytes used, 2140252 available, 8388608 total]

Erase flash device? [confirm] ---

3. Please post the output of "show flash all". See below for a sample output:

--- Router(boot)#show flash all System flash directory: File Length Name/status addr fcksum ccksum 1 13859704 c2500-is-l.122-8.T.bin 0x40 0x6BC3 0x6BC3 [13859768 bytes used, 2917448 available, 16777216 total] 16384K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

Chip Bank Code Size Name 1 1 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 2 1 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 3 1 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 4 1 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 1 2 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 2 2 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 3 2 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 4 2 01AD 2048KB AMD 29F016 Router(boot)# ---

Note in the output of the "show flash all" command that the flash is Read/Write. This is normal for Boot ROM mode, but when the full IOS is loaded the output will say Read Only. If it doesn't say Read/Write in Boot ROM mode you have problems. Most commonly a Boot ROM upgrade will fix the problem but sometimes the problem is mixing Flash SIMMs. If you have two SIMMs, try them one at a time.

Most of the time you won't have a problem mixing two types of flash memory. But sometimes this DOES cause problems. And I bought a few flash SIMMs earlier this year that simply would not work under any circumstances. Either they were a design not compatible with the 2500's flash memory controller or they were bad SIMMs. Fortunately I got a refund.

When it comes to memory, flash or DRAM or whatever, the very best situation to be in is to have all SIMMs or DIMMs identical and compatible with the memory controller circuitry.

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade the ios on my router but I am unable to do it. It would start the process and abort after it confirms if I want to erase the ios before loading the new ios. I would get an abort error. Has anyone experience this problem before? The switch is a 2520. I upgrade the boot roms so I don't think that's the problem. Any suggestions?
