At least with 'ip subnet-zero' support we can tell Cisco (and Cisco-like)
routers to treat 10.0.0 as a subnet and not a supernet. This was a real
problem with certain (mainly host) implementations back in the day, but I
think it's pretty common treatment nowadays, so I'm not sure how bad subnet
zero ambiguity is anymore. But the antithesis--directed broadcast ambiguity
can still be a real problem. Consider that the broadcast address for the 10
network and the 10.255.255 subnet are the same: 10.255.255.255.

10.0.0.254/24 is considered bad form as the subnet portion of the IP
address is all zeros....

Given a class-A network with a /24:
     255.0.0.0 network portion
     0.255.255.0 subnet portion
     0.0.0.255 host portion
and so
     10 - network
     0.0 - subnet
     254 - host

Notice that the subnet is all zeros... bad.
