Jason,
A layer 2 switch does what a bridge does, which is prevent loops via
spanning tree. A MAC address is needed by the ports for the source of the
BPDUs. Also, each port needs a unique MAC as it's perfectly legal to have a
module with 2 connections to the same segment/VLAN.
