Tom,
To avoid problems with mismatches in configuration, a
router can be configured as a soft-seed router. A
soft-seed router has a cable range of 0-0. The router
must learn the cable range from another router.
Soft-seed is the recommended way of configuration.
Whereas the hard seed router is configured with a
cable range i.e you are forcing the router to come up
with the specified cable range. In certain situaions,
you might need to force an interface to come up
despite the fact that its zone list conflicts with
that fo another router on the network.
Regards.
