The default behaviour when irb is configured is to bridge all packets, so
you could explicitly configure the bridge group to route a particular
protocol. That way, routable packets of this protocol are routed, while
nonroutable packets of this protocol or packets for protocols for which the
bridge group is not explicitly configured to route will be bridged.

Per your scenario, you might want to put "bridge 1 route ipx" so that ipx
traffic can be routed from other routed interfaces to bridge group 1 and
bridged if necessary. I don't know why IP would not work here becuase Ip
configuration-wise seems ok to me.
