Never thought the day would come, but... my turn. Passed yesterday in RTP.
Let me say that I have essentially been a lurker on this email list for the
past several months (since about October last year). I have not really made
any contributions, other than the (very) occasional asinine question. But
even asinine questions make you think, and I think that's the value of this
message board. I found it invaluable in my preparation.
I wanted to post the "I got my number" message for two reasons, even though I
do not feel like a significant contributor here. The first is to keep
everyone aprised of the latest number assignment. Not sure why, but that was
of interest to me. Second, I wanted to encourage those of you, lurking or
otherwise, who may feel discouraged by the whole lab exam process. This was
my *fifth* attempt. I can't tell you how many times I almost gave up after
feeling great about a test only to get the scores back with shock and dismay
at the "mistakes" I made. But in the end, the research into why I got docked
on any given exam was worth the effort, and that was invaluable almost as much
as the certification itself. I now know how to look up answers to seemingly
impossible scenarios, and if nothing else, I've learned never to say, "you
can't do that." So if you've had a few attempts, don't give up...
perseverance will get you through.
Advice? After every attempt, take an hour or two and do a brain dump to
notes. You'll forget petty details later, and THAT'S the stuff you need to
learn about. And as others here have said, don't spend all night the night
before the exam studying. If you don't know it by then, you won't after one
night of cramming. Watch a movie. This past Monday night for me, it was the
Wingate in-room movie, "Resident Evil." Nice, mindless brain candy. BTW,
Wingate's a great hotel for RTP-- stayed there 4 times! :}
I'll not bore anybody with study materials used or methodology. It's similar
to most everyone else's here. Same books, same practice labs, same time
logged into Groupstudy archives, etc., etc.
It feels great to be done. Now I'm gonna go get some sleep (not an original
sentiment, but just as pertinant). Congratulations to others before me, and
good luck and good hunting to those after.
