The 3550 runs an IOS based images. There are two version of the IOS image avai
lable based on your licensing. The first image is the SMI image - Standard Mul
tilayer Image and also available is the EMI image - Enhanced Multilayer Image w
hich has a much more rich feature set available.
This also holds true for the 2950 switches but from my understanding so far, th
e 2950 is actually different in the hardware also for the SMI versus the EMI im
ages.
Where as the 3550 is the same box but different images for SMI versus EMI.
Most rent-a-racks will be upgrading their equipment to the new 3550 EMI switche
s in the coming months.
