Steve,
sh cdp nei detail does show the remote ipx network number on serial
interfaces. However, this will not be helpful on a switched ethernet
inteface as the router shows the switchport as the cdp neighbor.

I believe you will get the remote end layer 3 protocol information using '
show cdp neigbor details' Please see the syntax
Just check u have enabled the cdp on global as well as interface mode. I
believe the remote end ruter might have cdp enabled.
