Perhaps another way to look at this problem is that no routing
protocol inherently decides whether to load balance. That function is
part of the route installation process for the main routing table. If
that process receives multiple equal-cost routes of the same
preference (assume only one source of routing information is
present), it will institute load-balancing, of a type dependent on
the platform and interface settings.
What sources of routing information can produce multiple equal cost routes?
Static routes Yes
RIP Yes
IGRP* Yes
OSPF Yes, except external routes
ISIS Yes, except externals
EIGRP* Yes -- need to check about externals
BGP No by default
* also can make the routing process think it's sending equal cost
that are actually unequal cost. Use with caution!
