The RS-232 chip on the board may be bad. I had this happen on one of my
routers, I tried everything to get a break sequence to work, no go. If you
have tried everything and it still hasn't worked, don't lose hope, there may
be a solution.. The chip is a small, square, surface mounted chip, right in
front of the port on the sys brd, with 8 legs on either side. Mine, (a
2505..), were Phillips, to verify the chip, take the part number and search
it in google, once you've located the proper component, here's what you do.
To verify the chip is bad, take an IC testor, and hold down the break key
while testing the inside and outside leads, one at a time, and see if there
is a signal getting through the chip. If you determine the chip is bad, it
will need to be replaced. These are surface mounted, and if you are up to
replacing it yourself, it is very delicate work. Take a soldering iron, and
heat one row of the connectors to the board, then with a thin tool, (exacto
knife). gently pry that side up, repeat until the legs come off the board,
the key here is to be very gentle, and not force the chip, it may take
several passes with the soldering iron to get each side off, but the legs
break off very easily, so be careful. Once you have the chip removed, there
are three identical chips on the board you can swap with, one is the aux
port, the other two are for the serial interfaces, (they have one chip for
async, one for sync, on my router the async was towards the con port, but an
IC testor can bear this out..). Once you have the replacement chip, you
simply, wet the legs with a tiny bit of solder, put it in place then use the
iron to fuse it back on. You could check the electronics stores for the
replacement part, and if need be, order new ones. Hope this helps..
