David,
My personal opinion is that 2500's are as good as 2600's and even as good as
3620, particulary when you consider the price. I've got a bunch of 2500's
with 16DRAM/16FLASH and run BGP and everything else just fine. I've got a
couple 2621's for the same reason as you (voice) and for the FastEthernet
ports for trunking. BRI WIC cards are cheap on the 2600 too, so maybe you
won't need a 2503, 2516, 2520 etc for ISDN.
I got a 3620 and expected it to run fast like the 3640's at work, but found
it is slow, so stick with 2600's for voice (you'll need two, not just one).
The 4700M+ runs the same processor as the 3640 so that's my favorite
low-cost router (I've got 5 as my core routers). If you're going to invest
in token ring, go with 4000-series rather than 2513 because you'll have a
hard time getting your money back from 2513's after November. But
4000-series are noisier and produce more heat. (Maybe that's okay in
England.)
For ISDN, Teltone is very popular (costs US$1200-1700); Madge is in the same
category. Adtran 550 and 800 are great, but overkill for home. If you get
a bargain on them, go for it. I'm sure there are other easy-to-operate
low-cost simulators.
I don't recommend you buy ATM ... too expensive. Learn that via on-line
rack time.
You sound anti-eBay, but there are some London sellers with great items and
great prices. Some have lots of variety so you can practically get
everything from one shop.
HTH, Kym
