Hi,
Firstly, thanks to those who responded to my message. I have spent most
of today trying to get this working. I am now convinced this is an IOS
problem. Attached below is one of the known bugs with EIGRP authentication
listed in the Bug Navigator. Whilst the specific verion that I was using is
not listed (12.1(10)), the symptoms are the same those as below. So I'll try
some other IOS versions.

Thanks,

Nik.

CSCds62728 Bug Details

Headline EIGRP stub with md5 authentication to neighbors does not work.

Severity 2
Status Verified
First Found-in Version 12.1 All affected versions
First Fixed-in Version 12.2(0.3), 12.2(0.3)T, 12.1(6.1), 12.2(0.7)PI01,
12.1(6.5)E, 12.1(6.5)EC, 12.2(0.18)S, 12.2(3.4)PB, 12.2(2)B Version help

When MD5 authentication is applied to Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing
Protocol (EIGRP) neighbors that are neighboring with a stub EIGRP router,
the
neighbor relationship is not formed.

Workaround: Disable MD5 encryption.
When md5 authentication is applied to eigrp neighbors that are neighboring
with
a stub eigrp router the neighbor relationship is not formed.

Only workaround found so far is to turn off md5 encryption.
