Eric,
Sorry for the late post. Last time I checked (2000), you must be hired
against or currently filling a billeted position in order to get a new
clearance, periodic update, or conversion (from military to DISCO). Your
sponsor (employer) must submit your application.
Your military clearance may be converted if it has not expired or been
inactive for more than two years. A clearance goes inactive once you leave a
billeted job and can be reactivated. After two years of inactive status, the
clearance is expired. At this point, you would have to reapply for a new
clearance.
Whenever you apply for a job that requires a clearance, you should know when
your clearance expires, and how long it has been inactive. After conversion,
you can call Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO) to find
out the status of your clearance: 888-282-7682.
Jim

Subject: TOTALLY OT: Security Clearance
Okay before I get started I just want to apologize for sending an OT post,
but I figured with so many people who read this list surely someone has some
info.
I am trying to find out how someone would go about getting a security
clearance. I had a TS/BI when I was in the AF, but it has expired and since
I am no longer in the military I'm not sure the process for getting one. If
anyone has any info or can at least point me in the right direction I would
greatly appreciate it.
Again, sorry for the OT post.
Thanks!
Eric
