Token Ring MAU cables??

Before I buy a Token Ring MAU I wanted to get some advice.

Do I just have to make sure to buy the DB9 to MAU adapter so I can plug from
my token ring card on the router directly into the Token ring MAU, or is
there something I'm missing?

Also, is this just used to get the token ring interface up, or is it
imperative to buy a 3920 switch or similar down the road?
