Jason,
I think what you will find is occurring is that the username password pair
is being used on one side and is being authenticated with the ppp sent
username on the remote. It may be going through an iteration to achieve
this. Do a debug ppp authentication and debug ppp negotiation to see exactly
what is going on.
The reason I say this is that the book is correct - the password must be
identical on both sides.
