boot from tftp

Has anyone successfully accomplished this. I have several lab 2600 routers
that all have 16MB or more of RAM but some only have 8MB of flash... I
thought if I could get these routers to boot from tftp server instead of
flash, I could run a version of IOS that wont fit in 8MB of flash. However,
after setting up one router as a tftp server and using boot system tftp
iosfilename in the config of the other routers, I keep getting a file read
error.

If I go to rmon and tftp from there, it works... What is the trick? Can I
only tftp over a serial interface? I am trying to use the ethernets since
all the routers are connected to the same switch? I also assumed (couldn't
find documentation to suggest otherwise) that the tftp'd image would be
loaded into RAM and used instead of copied to flash (in which case, my whole
idea is shot). Some suggestions please.
