If you want a router to be a node in a Source Route Bridged network you
must configure the router to generate and manage the RIF field when it
is needed.
I say 'when it is needed' because RIF is normally not used if the node
you communicate with is on the same local ring as your node.
When a router (or node) in on a Token Ring want to communicate with
another node it need to get the mac address of the remote node. The
router or node sends out a frame on the local ring to find the other
node. This packet has not a RIF field.
If no answer is received from the local ring your router will fail to
communicate with the other node.
However if your router have enabled Source Route Bridging ('multiring
all') it will then (after the local frame that fails) send out an
explorer packet to all rings. This packet has a RIF field.
