As far as the conversion, I've always thought the easiest way to
understand how to do the conversion from canonical to non-canonical or
vice-versa is to keep in mind that you are changing the bit order of the
bytes. That is you do not need to change the byte order or anything
else, just the bit order of each byte. This will save you from having
to memorize various schemes, methods, etc. that have no intuitive
underpinnings.
