I highly recommend the cat1900 if you need a good paperwieght around the house.
Make sure you get the cat1924 though, as you may need the weight of those extr
a ports to hold stuff down, especially if it's particularly windy in your area.

Serisouly the only possible use I can think of for the 1900 in an IE lab is to
interact with another switch so you can set up vtp or trunking. The commands ar
en't close enough to either the 2900 switch CLI or the 5000 set-based CLI to be
useful. And with only two fast ethernet ports (all the others are 10 Mbps) you
're pretty limited on the inter-vlan stuff you can do. The only reason I have 1
900's here is because my school is a network academy site, so we have to teach
them when we teach switching and vlans to our ccna students.

Hal

Subject: OT: 1900/5000 switch

What is the advantage of having a Catalyst 5000 as opposed to a Catalyst
1900 to study with in my home lab? I know the Cat 5000 has more features,
modules, etc. but is it worth my time to implement a 1900 in my lab
scenarios and use a 5000 simulator to brush up on the commands and features
or just buy the 5000? I don't know much about the 1900 so I'm just looking
for some insight.

TIA
Mike
