Dennis,

Typically you'll find routing loops in situations where you're
performing mutual distribution between a number of protocols using a
single or multiple points of redistribution. The emphasis here would be
in knowing the basics/fundamentals of your routing protocols like
administrative distance(AD), metrics, timers and updates(DV protocols)
etc.. A route showing up as possibly down does not automatically suggest
a routing loop, but simply an unstable route. Tools like trace and ping
would be more efficient in determing if you have a routing loop. The key
here is spotting the issue(a possible Routing loop) from the requirements
based on your knowledge of various protocols. This way you can
implement/use whatever IOS configuration necessary to perform the
necessary filtering or management of the route information on
redistribution.
