Ludwig,

            The subinterfaces does not make a difference in this
situation. The requirements call for authentication on Area 0, the
Backbone area. Since all LSA/routes are routed through the backbone then
any router connected to the backbone would have to be configured to
support authentication. As well if there is also a requirement for a
virtual link, then authentication must be configured on the
virtual-link. This is the case becuase the virtual link extends Area0(the
backbone) through the link to the partioned area.
