I think that, in general, assigning a router id for both ospf and bgp is a
good idea. It makes them easier to keep track of, and you know there won't
be any ospf/bgp issues even if the routers are reloaded. I, like you,
usually use the router number when in a practice lab setting. I also assign
mac addresses for ipx ethernet interfaces, to make it easier to ping and
trace. Anything that gives you less to keep track of is a good thing!

Is it legal on the lab to assign router id to the router ?
For example, if router 3 is using ospf and virtual link is involved - as a
good practice use command router-id 3.3.3.3 (assuming that is no ip network
3.x.x.x anywhere on the network). Of course, I will restart opsf process,
but looks like IOS even prompting me for it.
Any strong opinion against that practice?
