You do not plug an IP phone into an FXS or an FXO vic. The FXS is for analog p
hones and faxes to plug into. The FXO is something that you connect to a regul
ar phone line that leads to the CO. It is like a phone that your network uses
to call the regular outside telephone network.
If the IP phone you are speaking of is like the ones we used to have at my old
job, it could plug directly into the ethernet switch (or, more accurately, a wa
ll port that was connected to an ethernet switch). In fact, you could plug one
in and then plug your pc into the phone, to share one ethernet port, but that
is not necessarily optimal.
If you are lucky enough to have a 3640 with voice module and vics, all you need
is cheap old analog phones, and you are set.
In short, you do NOT need to purchase IP phones to work with FXS and FXO stuff.
Have fun with voice. It is a great way to learn other, more difficult subjects
like QOS (FRTS, WRED, RTP, etc.).
