I like the way you say "usually" ... :-)) I was lucky, mine did not bite
at all... but heard many stories of those who did/do bite.

I want to add that it is pretty clear in the lab how they want you to do
things. They leave VERY VERY LITTLE space for you to do your own thing.
And when allowed, they hint at what they want very loudly.

Also, one mistake most of us candidates (yes, I am a candidate once
again since I am planning my Security CCIE) make is overthink the
question to death. One of my procotrs actually laughed at me for how I
interpreted a particular question.

So my advice is, if painted into a corner, then you are clearly being
asked to do it just that way. If you find an ambiguous question, chances
are you don't know it well enough, or you will be told to re-read the
question; hint: don't take too much liberty in deciding how best to
config something.

BTW, humans do grade the exams as I saw my proctors touch many of the
other racks during my session.
