No comment, not familiar with the 1600. Configuring the 3900 is not
difficult, but its user interface is different from the rest of the Cisco
product line. I'd try to borrow one or get some lab time where one is
present.

The 2900-XL series of switches are not suitable for lab practice of
Catalyst LAN switching. The command structure is similar to IOS and
quite different from the rest of the Catalyst line. While similar
results in terms of VLANs, trunking, etc. can generally be achieved,
the command structure to do so will be markedly different than a
non-XL Catalyst switch. You want a switch with software based on the
Catalyst 4000, 5000, or 6000 series. The non-XL 2900 series should be
satisfactory.
