It doesn't have to be symmetrical. If you want to have one side use loopback
and the other side just use serial, the "ebgp-multihop" is needed at the
router that uses serial, the "update-source lo0" is needed at the router
that uses looback 0. The way to think about it is on the router with the
loopback 0, you are telling the router to use the loopback address as the
update source and on the router with the serial, it needs at least 2 hops to
reach to that loopback - the first hop only reach to the other end of the
serial.
