It really depends on your network and what your trying to accomplish. Also
if you use the subinterface you can test the backup by shutting down the
physical interface with the shutdown command. If the backup is on the
physical interface you cannot use the shutdown command to test it, you will
have to physically break the connection.

They say in the configuration to put the backup interface bri 0 in the sub
interface s1.1(note it is point-to-point, i don't know about
point-to-multipoint).
