The best source I've found for really, really detailed explanations of the
mechanics like what you want is the new book by Alex Zinin (Cisco IP
Routing: Packet Forwarding & Intra-domain Routing Protocols). It's much
more advanced than what is _needed_ for passing the CCIE lab, but it makes
for really fascinating reading. I thought for instance I understood static
routes (basic stuff, right?) -- until I started reading this book. Now I
understand that I really know even less than I thought :-)
