Search the archives and CCO for "AUX back-to-back". You don't need the
modems, just a rollover cable.
If you use modems, it depends on the specific hardware. You'll need to
"dumb them down" to use a non-dial leased line type of setup if you just
want to run them with a wire between them. AUX-to-AUX is easier. Rather
than a POTS simulator, a small home PBX such as the Panasonic KX-T308
or KXTD-308 can be used to provide dial tone and ringing. These are in
the ~$600 range new, and occasionally show up on EBay. For modems, the
older KX-T308 (analog switching matrix) will get better speeds than the
KXT-D models (PCM) but either will go to about 24Kbps.
