Brian,
You are right. It is possible to find a 2501 on Ebay for about $350.00. I
actually bought a couple of 2503's on Ebay and I got fair prices. When it
was all said and done, though, I ended up spending about 2 weeks
hemming-and-hawwing over that one purchase. The seller forgot to send me
the rack mount kits that were promised in the listing and I NEVER received
the documentation CD that was shown in the ad.
I needed a lot more equipment and I did not want to invest all the time it
would take to put a home lab together in a piecemeal fashion.
To avoid the hassle, I went to ccbootcamp and followed the link to Optimized
Systems. I went to the "PayPal Only" store and selected all of the
equipment I needed. I ended up paying $419.00 for each 2501 I needed. I
sent 1 paypal payment to Network Learning for all of the equipment I need.
In about 5 days, the UPS guy showed up on my doorstep with all my stuff.
Nice and easy.
When my routers arrived from ccbootcamp, they had IOS 12.1 installed and 16M
of RAM and 16M of flash. You'll have to search through a lot of listings on
ebay to find something like that. In addition, all of the stuff I ordered
was in the box. They've really got their stuff together over at NLI.
All-in-all, the money I MIGHT have saved at Ebay was no worth the time that
I would have invested.
Disclaimer: I do NOT work for Network Learning, Inc. or Optimized Systems.
I'm just pleased with my interaction with the folks over there and I'm
passing the word to my fellow CCIE candidates.
That's my take on the situation, anyway.
Take care.
Todd
