 Friends,

I passed my test last Sunday at RTP. It was my first (and last) attempt on
this tough lab.
I can only say good things about the facility, the proctors and the overall
environment.

 For preparation:
Clark, Doyle, Halabi, Caslow, Solie, CCO, DocCD, 100's of hours of time
here on my rack at the office (nothing fancy, bunch of routers, no ISDN, no
ATM) and 4 years of networking experience.

 Advice:
Forget the horror stories! Don't be nervous! there is nothing to worry
about! The exam IS FAIR!!!
For the preparation... READ and UNDERSTAND the books.. the most important
one is JEFF DOYLE's TCP/IP vol I.. I think it is the best book out there.
That should be the first step in the preparation for the lab.. spend hours
reading the books, make notes and just learn. The labs will be very easy to
accomplish after a good understanding of the technologies. Halabi's book is
also excellent!

Use Caslow as a guide not as your core content, the approach he has is
excellent.

The trick on passing the test:
a) Be PRECISE ... (it does not matter if you are FAST if what you are
configuring is not CORRECT).. again, be PRECISE!
b) FOCUS... on the LAB and only on the LAB. Forget about the airplanes or
your headaches or the chair or the guy next to you.
c) ENJOY... you are taking the test because YOU DESERVE it and because YOU
WANT TO. It should not feel like punishment. You should feel good and proud
about it.
d) KNOW all items on the BLUEPRINT. All of them, if you get something in the
test and go... ??HUH>???, you are in trouble. YOU NEED ALL THE POINTS.
e) STUDY the DocCD!!!!!! this is a MUST. What more help can you get???
Having access to a DocCD is even better than having 5 CCIE's next to you
helping you out, really. The DocCD has more knowledge then all of us
together. USE IT! (but know how to get to things quickly)
f) COMMIT.. study hard. and then harder. spend all the time you have on the
rack and when not in the lab just READ.
g) SLEEP.. and watch a movie the night before.. I saw " Rock Star ", lots of
laughs...... got my mind of the test

Now, I want to thank first of all my wife Paola.. she is the BEST !!!! I
also have to thank John Hodges for taking care of all the issues at the
office while I spent most of my time on weird configurations... I also need
to thank YanCarlos and Alex for getting me into the industry and making this
career so much fun. On people I don't personally know, I want to thank Scott
from routerlabonline, he gave me access to a 3920, Isdn and ATM just two
days before my test in a very short notice (few hours), I also want to thank
Karl Solie for being so helpful on answering my questions before he posted
the solutions for the labs, and, I want to thank Tom Gianelos and my SEs at
Cisco for their help and encouragement.

Good Luck!!!

Gonzalo Palacios
