Although this has been beaten over & over again here...

It will not work for subnets that are already being advertised into
ospf.

YES it only works INTO ospf.

What you need to do is create a loopback on the ASBR in the same major
network, but a different subset of the subnet you are trying to get
there,

IE: You have 172.168.1.1/28 in OSPF. You want 172.168.1.0/24 to be the
summary address in OSPF.

Create a loopback at the ASBR of 172.168.1.17/28. DO NOT ADVERTISE INTO
OSPF. Instead redistribute this connected interface into OSPF so that
OSPF sees it as an external route. Add the summary-address of
172.168.1.0/24 & OSPF will create a route to NULL 0 for 172.168.1.0/24.

The last task on the OSPF Lab in the Lab Kit requires that you use
summary-address 152.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 and summary-addr 152.1.2.0
255.255.255.0 on r6, and then limit the redistribution of routes from
the OSPF domain to the IGRP backbone.

Unfortunately, when I try using the summary-address command, it does
not
enter the routes into my r6 routing table at all. There are more
specific routes, but not the summary routes. I tried using area range
on other routers, and I seemed to have some success briefly with one
of
the routes, but that is not the solution used by the authors.

There^Rs probably some really basic reason why this is not working the
way it worked for the authors. I was a little skeptical about the
idea
of using summary-address to summarize OSPF non-external routes so that
they could be redistributed into IGRP. I thought you could only use
summary-address to summarize external routes that had come INTO OSPF
from another routing protocol.

BTW, how come there is so little discussion of these Hutnik and
Saterlee
Lab Kit scenarios. I know the authors supplied answers, but there are
a
few glaring mistakes that you would think we would be discussing.
Besides, people have the answers to CCBootcamp scenarios, too, but
that
doesn^Rt stop people from talking about the scenarios a lot.
