Q1. Yes, u need to have auto-summary on if you are using a classful default
gateway.
Q2. Not a Cisco Standard way, but yes you can do it, I have tried it and it
seems to work exactly the ip default-network way.
Q3. Behaviour of RIP has changed since 12.0 (??) and now u need
default-information originate to propagate default route to peers.
