I recently had a very good question from someone and thought it would be
worth sharing...
Q: ...should I always add frame intf dce command to the FR Switch
interfaces even if it's not the DCE?
Let me see if I can clarify this for you. Lets separate the two
commands: frame intf dce and clock rate.
Clock Rate
First the clock rate must always, and can only be, on the DCE interface,
a simple sh contr s 0 will help you determine this. Would you believe I
didn't know the sh contr s 0 command during my first lab attempt, too
early or what :)
Now for frame intf dce...
First what does this command do? Configures the Frame Relay switch type
and DCE is used when a router or access server functions as a switch
connected to a router. This has nothing to do with any router interface
controller. This is why you must enable frame-switching before you can
even use this command. All we are telling the router is that it is
connected to another router acting as a frame-switch. Therefore the
command can be added to either side, but frame-switching must be enabled
on the side it is implemented on.
