Something to watch for is the particular VLAN protocols supported.
We just went through this after installing some newer 36xx boxen that
turned out only to speak 802.1Q, while the supervisor cards on our
5000's only spoke ISL. We had to upgrade the supervisors (actually it
was simplest to make the 5000's 5500's) so we had a consistent
trunking protocol.

You might be able to have a consistent ISL environment with an older
switch if you are willing to run ISL throughout. This is one of
those things where you'll need to spend time with CCO and the version
notes to find out all the boxes, and the (switch)IOS versions you
want to run, are compatible.
