If you use the ip host myhost x.x.x.x command with the service
hide-telnet-addresses you won't see the address of the host your
connecting to on the terminal. Without the service
hide-telnet-addresses command the address shows up in parenthesis beside
the host's name.

Try it without service hide-telnet-addresses then turn it on and you'll
see.

What does the service hide do? Hide the default message?

In conjunction with the command
R1(config)#service hide-telnet-address

Try
R1(config)#busy-message Unable to make your connection...

Richard,
how did your lab go, got luck?

Does anyone know how to make the typical failed login attempt from
telnet to
respond with your own message, instead of the typical access
denied...............
