Whenever you add a new network layer protocol to a link that is already in
the up/up state with PPP encapsulation, you need to do a "shutdown" and then
a "no shutdown". The network layer protocols that will run across a PPP link
are negotiated when the link first comes up. This also holds true when
adding IS-IS to an interface using PPP. If the link is already up, no
neighbors will be formed till the interface is "shutdown" and brought back
up. OSICP needs to be negotiated for IS-IS to work.
I like to add this into practice labs that I write. Early in the lab PPP is
used on a link and later IPX or IS-IS is enabled on the link also. The
gotcha on this one is that the link needs to be "shutdown" and then brought
back up in order for IPX or IS-IS to work across that link. So as a rule of
thumb, whenever you make any changes to an interface with PPP encapsulation
do a "shutdown" then a "no shutdown".

I am doing some IPX in the lab today, and I have a link that is using ppp
encapsulation. I put ipx networks on each side but I couldn't ping or get
rip working. So I enabled IPXWAN and it started to work. Do I have to do
this on a ppp link? I have looked at some documentation and I saw a config
that had ppp with IPX with no ipxwan configured, so I assume you don't.
Maybe it is an IOS issue? I am running 12.0(9) on each router. Thanks.
