If you set the clock to approximately the correct time, the
router will sync up much faster. If it's a router without an
internal clock, in my experience it syncs almost immediately.

Some boxes will flat refuse to sync to anything too much out
of sync with their own clock.

Doing a bit of 'debug ntp xxx' will tell you a lot about how
these things work. Other than that RFC1305 is actually a good
source of information.
