Hi Xujing,
You need both of them to start authenticating routing updates between two
OSPF neighbors.
ip ospf authn mes
will enable authentication under that interface
ip ospf mess 1 md5 cisco
is basically setting the authentication parameters

remember you need to have another line also under the "router ospf pid"
