I also have a few 2500 series routers, the upgrade behavior depends on
the current version of boot rom's (you can get newer Rom Chips for about
$15 bucks on eBay). Most of them allow you to do a "copy tftp flash"
that will initiate a quick verification that the tftp server and file is
available, then an erase of the flash, then an automatic boot into the
Rom IOS (RXBOOT) that allows the flash to be in Read/Write mode and
finally a TFTP transfer of the new IOS code for you. If you are on the
console port you can "witness" the whole event..
