I work for an ISP and we just use hdlc on our Junipers (we don't stick with
default ppp) since it's usually a Cisco on the other end. We change to PPP
for customers that run Bay routers and other boxes.
Juniper and Netopia routers both call it cisco-hdlc in the OS in order to
avoid confusion about which HDLC version it is (open standard or Cisco
proprietary).
