Cisco hdlc is not using the standard HDLC, therefore if your
non-cisco-remote using
hdlc, it may not work, hence use PPP is the best.

If both ends are Cisco, then HDLC makes the most sense as it's
default plug-and-play.
If either end is non-Cisco, then you'll have to use PPP.
