RE: cheapest way to implement ATM PVC

I just rented some rack time at Cisco's practice lab at NC State
University (5 days), and I was able to practice Voice over IP (over ATM)
to my heart's content in less than 6 hours. The VOIP over ATM exercise
provided was straightforward and fun, so I did it twice, and I spent
lots of extra time fiddling with possible commands and settings that you
can use with Voice over IP equipment. Let's face it. VOIP is much
simpler than routing. In my opinion, it is not necessary to buy the
equipment needed to practice this technology (specifically Voice over IP
over ATM). I feel the same way about the 3920 TR switch. Definitely
not worth buying. You can get quite comfortable with it in 2 or 3
hours. (I have a Cat 1800 TR switch already that is cheap and uses a
similar menu user interface-- it doesn't do TRBRFs, though).

Now whether it might be worth spending the money on ATM equipment for
its learning ATM itself (SVCs, NSAPs, etc.) is another question, but the
dollar amounts make it absolutely out of the question for me right now,
as I have run through a lot of money already on equipment for my lab.

In conclusion, I favor renting rack time for the offbeat stuff like
VoIP, ATM, and the 3920, while focusing most of my home lab efforts on
difficult core subjects like OSPF (with FR and ISDN), EIGRP, BGP, as
well as DLSW+ and RSRB. BTW, VoIP reminds me a little of DLSW+ over
TCP, so that if you have done DLSW+, VOIP will come easier.

Best regards,
Tom Larus

Peter,
Thanks for those valuable information from you. Can u explain me
some more.

If i buy two MC3810 with modules:
APM-FXS (voice interface)
MFT-T1 (compression module)

and connect them : MC3810--------MC3810 (both having same modules).

1- Will this be enough for me to do back-to-back ATM PVC plus voice.

2- Does these modules give me the same commands as of 3640 with ATM and
Voice.

3- Does these ATM modules can be connected to the third party ATM swtich
like bay or acsend for SVCS....

The basic theme is the do the ATM+Voice lab with least expense ...

I will be waiting for ur reply.

Mamoor,

4500M has no support for voice.

2600 uses the same slot for an NM-1V or NM-2V voice module as it uses
for NM-IMA ATM.

If you want voice and ATM then you need either a 3640 or a MC3810 with
AVM, BVM, or DVM and a MFT card.

Of all the options the MC3810 with AVM & MFT is probably the most cost
effective. However, it is not on the official CCIE lab kit list, though
it is used on the CVOICE course. It provides 2 x Serial + 10 BaseT and
as such is very similar in both function and performance as a 2610.
In addition it can also take both a Voice module and a Multiflex Trunk
module. The mft is available as an E1, a T1 or E1/T1 software
configurable version. CPU wise it has similar processing power to a
2610. If you want to do VoIP you need 64 Mbytes Ram and a 12.1 IOS with
VoIP support.

Hope this helps

Peter
