Albert,

I think the question is whether the interface or subinterface is in active
state. If the interface's layer 3 is up then you can ping.

For most of duplex circuits like T1 and SM/MM ATM, the interface's layer 2
and 3 protocal can be activated by loopback to the router or crossconnect to
other port.

But the rule does not apply to the Ethernet, if loopback to an Ethernet
port, the interface layer 3 is still down even you can still the light is
on.
