'ip ospf authentication null' command

Hello Group,

Can someone please give an explanation of the 'null' option in the above
command. I understand that this command is used at the interface configs,
and I'm wondering if this is a way of disabling authetication of an
interface that is in an area that is authenticated? does this apply to clear
text or does it just apply to md5?
