if your lab will potentially scale more than eight devices then go for 2511
(16 lines) and not RJ because it only has one serial. 2511 will have 2
serial and these can this can be another router in your network as well as a
term-serv. So generally, the more interfaces the better.
2509 is limited to only 8 tty lines which presumably you want to utilise for
reverse telnet.
octal cables are relatively cheap from any reseller.

i'm building my home lab and like to use a 2509 as terminal server. Can I
use both Cisco 2509 (the Cisco2509 and the AS2509-RJ) as terminalserver? I
think the difference are AS2509-RJ has only one Serial-port, but I can
connect the routers console directly to the AS2509-RJ. With the Cisco2509 I
would need a special cable (CAB-OCtal-ASYNC).
I'm right?
