Steve: The 8228 is neither a bridge or a layer three device. It is
simply a connector for devices in a single ring. When a device inserts
into the ring you should hear the 8228 relay click. The 8228 has no
power or battery. It gets power to open the relay from the NIC. There
is a tool to reset the relays which sometimes get stuck.
